New apartment planning

The change in the weather is definitely bringing out my nesting instinct. To tide myself over, I pulled together a few images that capture the mood I’m hoping to create in my future apartment. Lately I’ve been drawn to neutrals – I love the combination of soft gray, natural linen, and white, with a few black accents to ground it. clockwise from top: Ikea SoarĂ© placemat, Black & White and a Bit in Between by Celerie Kemble, Aerin large leaf dish, Urban Outfitters Magical Thinking Diamond Tile rug, Crate & Barrel Vienna black side chair, Room & Board grey velvet pillow, Wisteria lacquer side table

Bentwood chairs

Although we probably won’t have a place of our own for a couple months (my saint of a best friend has taken us in for the time being), I’m still mentally planning out our future apartment. We sold a lot of the furniture from our last place, most of which was purchased only becauase it was super-cheap. However, one thing that I really, really hope works in our new place is a set of bentwood chairs that I found on Craigslist a while back. What’s that? No one in their right mind would try to fit six dining chairs into a New York apartment? Nah, it’ll be fine… [disappears under pile of chairs] After we moved into our last apartment, I began scouring Craigslist daily for some decent dining chairs. I settled, at first, for a mismatched set of windsor chairs. They were fine for a while, but the clashing wood tones drove me nuts. What I really wanted was something more like these Thonet-style bentwood chairs. I’m partial to the classic styles in brown …

Vermont Farm Table

Right before I left Vermont for New York, I came across a very cool store in Burlington called Vermont Farm Table and filed it away in my brain. Although I’m no longer in VT, I still think this store is cool enough to share with you. In addition to a line of furniture and tabletop accessories made from reclaimed, local materials, they also sell custom dining tables, which definitely appeals to the perfectionist in me. If I had a big kitchen/dining area to furnish, this would be my first stop for sure. I do love a good farmhouse table. Below are a few of my favorites. Believe me, these photographs don’t do justice to the texture of each piece. When I visited their studio I wanted to touch everything – the natural finishes of the wood, the soft, nubby linens, and the smooth ceramic glazes. I will definitely be back on my next trip up north. Change is good.

So I’m officially the worst. I had just started to get on a roll with this little blog and then – radio silence for nearly 2 months (has it really been that long?? I’m the worst). However, I promise I have a good reason – we’re moving! To New York City! With no jobs or apartment! As you can imagine, things have been a bit stressful around these parts as we try to make this move work. Although we may not be totally prepared for what awaits us in New York, moving makes the most sense for our careers, we have lots of friends in the city, and we’re both really excited for a change of pace after 6 years of living in Vermont. That said, I’m definitely apprehensive about the logistics of it all. I’m trying to enjoy this transition, but at the same time it would be so nice to skip right over the whole finding a job and apartment business and get right to the fun part – decorating! Below are a …

Current obsession: filament pendants

… Lately it seems that these gorgeous pendant lamps are popping up everywhere – I can’t get them out of my head. The one above, from the latest issue of Country Living, is my favorite so far (but of course I didn’t write down the source. I’m such an excellent blogger). This modern take from Restoration Hardware is also pretty awesome: … … Pottery Barn makes a more tapered version: … … And while a bit different, I love this shade that echoes the shape and lines of the metal pendants. Also how gorgeous is this kitchen?? … … I’m thinking some sort of DIY might need to happen in my apartment. Maybe a shade like this one from Target, plus some 1″ black trim?

My local TJ Maxx has really stepped it up lately. I have to say, TJ, I’m impressed. I love the deep-gray velvet and nailhead trim on this headboard. Cute little woven side table. Pretty pair of Louis XVI chairs, again with lovely gray upholstery. Also, this guy. Who could resist that face??
